NextGen Sciences launches the baculoworkstationTM – the first automated platform for baculovirus protein expression

Cambridgeshire, UK; 12 October 2005 – NextGen Sciences Ltd announced today that it is launching the baculoworkstationTM - the first precision automated platform for robust, reproducible, high throughput baculovirus production. The system has been developed by leading insect cell expression scientists and, for the first time, offers an automated system to optimise and accelerate insect cell protein expression.

The baculoworkstation, which is available from today, has been designed by NextGen Sciences to address the issues facing researchers using insect cells for protein expression. The manual production of recombinant baculoviruses is a labour-intensive, time consuming, technically challenging process. The baculoworkstation automates these processes, providing “out-of-the-box” baculovirus protein expression and removing the need for protocol development or robotics programming.

Commenting on the system, Dr Kevin Richards, Senior Researcher at NextGen Sciences, said: “The input from insect expression specialists has ensured that the system addresses the most important user issues. For example, for the first time researchers can work with pre-optimised protocols to get up and running in the shortest time, while increasing throughput and reproducibility.”

The core capabilities of the baculoworkstation include the automation of cell seeding into 24-well plates, transfections, infections, viral dilutions, and parallel expression screening. The system also has the facility for in-house protocol development, with expert application support provided by the development team.

Dr Grant Cameron, NextGen Sciences’ Commercial Director, commented: “This new addition to our Gene-to-Protein suite of products underlines our strategy to provide first-to-market solutions to improve protein research. Researchers are increasingly turning to insect cells to express the proteins they require, and with our in-house baculovirus expertise and integrated automation and software experience, NextGen Sciences is uniquely positioned to address this rapidly expanding market.”
